Director, School of Occupational Therapy

The Dalhousie University Faculty of Health Professions invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Occupational Therapy. This five-year term position is expected to commence July 1, 2015 and may be renewed for a second five-year term. The successful candidate will also be awarded a tenure stream position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor depending on qualifications.

The School of Occupational Therapy prepares individuals to assume occupational therapy leadership positions in health and community systems in Canada and around the world. The School has a strong commitment to balancing professional education and research. It offers a Master’s Entry-level program and a distance Post-professional Master’s program, and actively participates in two PhD programs (Health and Interdisciplinary). The Entry-level program is accredited with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and World Federation of Occupational Therapy and has demonstrated excellence in occupational therapy and occupational science. Its distance education program is innovative and a model for other distance programs in Canada. The School is housed in the Faculty of Health Professions which includes a large and diverse collection of schools/college and programs. The School is seeking a professional leader with a strong understanding of the research world and the rapidly changing university and health care contexts. The Director reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Professions and will provide strategic leadership within the School, the Faculty and the University as a whole. He/she will demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to interprofessional education. The Director will oversee educational program delivery, assessment and accreditation, research, faculty development and evaluation, and human resource and fiscal management. The Director will be successful in engaging the clinical community with the university’s education, research and clinical activities.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate and be eligible for licensure as an occupational therapist in Nova Scotia. He/she will demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and administration. The Director will have a collaborative leadership style, strong mentorship and interpersonal skills, a creative and entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated skills in building relationships within communities both on and off campus. Integrity, sound judgment and a sense of fairness are all important personal qualities of the new Director, who will value and promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the School’s strategic planning and daily operations with students, faculty and staff.

Located in the beautiful harbour city of Halifax, Dalhousie University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. It is a research intensive university with strong research programs in diverse disciplines including health professions, medicine, law and business and is affiliated with many of Atlantic Canada’s major hospitals and community agencies.
