Niroshaa Arumuggam is a first year M.Sc. student of the Department of Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture who investigates the anticancer properties of a new drug candidate synthesized from natural biomolecules of apple and fish oil.

Niroshaa was surprised when Dr. Micheal Johnston, Director of Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute announced that she had won the First Place Award for her presentation at its Atlantic Canadian conference in Halifax November 3-4.

Niroshaa’s presentation was on “Cytotoxic effects of phloridzin docosahaenoate on chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cells”. Niroshaa is a member of Fruit Bioactives and Bioproducts laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe, Canada Research Chair in Fruit Bioactives & Bioproducts and her research is funded by the Discovery Grant Research Program of the NSERC.
