POSITION:                PART-TIME ACADEMIC INSTRUCTOR

TERM:                         January 5, 2015 – April 9, 2015

PAY RATE:                 According To CUPE Collective Agreement

WORK ASSIGNMENT:  The part-time academic instructor will be responsible for teaching NURS2000.03 – Teaching & Learning and the Communication Process during the Winter term of the academic year 2014-2015.
Teaching and learning transactions among nurses and individuals, families, groups and communities are integral to health and well-being. The process of communication is central to the teaching-learning process and occurs within the nurse-patient relationship (a collaborative-partnership). The course is designed to assist students to critically analyze and integrate the teaching-coaching domain of nursing practice within the helping role of the nurse. Principles and theories of learning are used to identify strategies to help clients acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to attain/maintain optimal levels of health. The course includes an introduction to the counseling role of the nurse with a focus on therapeutic communication strategies necessary to establish partnerships with clients. Students are given opportunities to expand their existing interviewing and communication skills and teaching abilities.
This is a 3 credit hour course with a total of 3 hours of lecture/online activities per week on Mondays, 1135 – 1425.
This contract runs from January 1, 2015 through April 30, 2015. The part-time academic instructor reports directly to the Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
·         Development of teaching and learning activities related to the course
·         Delivery and co-ordination of the course
·         Assessment and evaluation of student learning
·         Use of BbLearn for course delivery
·         Responding to student queries about coursework
·         Attending initial instruction with Instructional Learning Online services
·         Participation in course discussions within the program
·         Develop and administer examinations
·         Submission of grades
·         Follow up with students as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must hold a graduate degree with a focus on teaching and learning, or related field, with relevant expertise and teaching experience. PhD preferred.

WORK ASSIGNMENT:  The part-time academic instructor will be responsible for teaching NURS4260.03 – Community Development and Advocacy during the Winter term of the academic year 2014-2015.
This course builds on the content of N4250 (Community Health Assessment). The focus is on critical thinking, interventions, and the evaluation of community health nursing strategies with client groups and communities. Community development is used as a strategy to put primary health care principles into nursing practice. Students are encouraged to work with communities using an empowerment and advocacy approach. Current local, national and international health issues are explored. Clinical experience in a variety of community settings allows students to practice nursing in a reflective manner to improve the health of the community as a whole.
 
This is a 3 credit hour course with 3 hours of lecture held on Mondays, 11:35-14:25 followed by 1 hour Tutorial and 6 hours of clinical per week in community agencies starting January 5, 2015 until April 30, 2015.
