Microsoft is retiring support of Windows XP, April 2014

Posted by Information Technology Services on February 5, 2014 in General Announcements

Microsoft has announced that as of April 8, 2014, support for the Windows XP operating system will be discontinued. That means many of the oldest computers on our network will be left vulnerable as there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates that fend off the latest virus and malware threat.

As a result of Microsoft’s announcement, and to protect information and other systems on the University network, those computers will need to be either upgraded or replaced soon after April. Should any of the machines be compromised, they will need to be removed from the network immediately, so please plan ahead.

An ITS Project to Replace Dated XP Computers is currently underway.

There is a project team dedicated to helping Faculties and departments in this process. Work has begun to identify those computers that will be affected. Departments/Faculties with significant numbers of XP computers have been contacted. The planning process will include identification of XP computers and options for replacements.
