WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the field and lab intensive course, BIOL 3630.03, “Field Methods in Animal Behaviour”.  The course will be offered in the Summer session, April 28-May 12, 2014, Monday to Saturday, approx. 0835-1625.  Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments.
 
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience in Animal Behaviour.  Up-to-date (within last 2 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and a driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching or co-teaching BIOL 3622.03, "Ornithology". The course will be offered in the summer session and meet from May 13-28, 2014, Sunday through Saturday,  approx. 0905-1655 (but some field trips will start at 0430).  In addition to the usual responsibilities of teaching a course, the part-time academic will be responsible for students at all times of day for 7 days while off campus at the Harrison Lewis Centre field station near Port Joli, NS. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. In addition, the part-time academic will be responsible for driving students in vehicles rented by the university, and for meal planning and obtaining food and supplies for the week off campus. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments.  

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and field research experience with birds.  Up-to-date (within last 2 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for co-teaching the field part of BIOL/ENVS/GEOG 3633.03, “GIS in Ecology”. The course will be offered in the Summer session, June 13-28, 2014, and will meet Mon-Sat, approx. 0830-1625.  The part-time academic will be responsible for (1) the safety and well-being of students during the 5-days spent at the Harrison Lewis Centre, Port Joli, NS, from June 20-24; (2) designing and managing the field projects, in consultation with the primary course instructor, Jennifer Strang, Dalhousie GIS centre; (3) introducing the field projects during the first week of course; (4)  preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within this budget; (5) planning meals for the 5 days and procuring the food; (6) driving students in 7-passenger vehicles rented by the university; and (7) attending and assisting in the evaluation of the student project presentations on June 28. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time BEFORE the official start date to design the field projects, prepare necessary materials, organize supplies, and arrange field logistics.
 
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience. Up-to-date (within last 2 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates with coursework and research experience in landscape ecology and use of Geographic Information Systems to answer ecological questions.

In addition, the part-time academic will be responsible for driving students in vehicles rented by the university. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking.
 
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience directly related to the topic of the course.  Up-to-date (within last 2 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and a driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia.
