Posted by Information Technology Services on November 22, 2013 in General Announcements

Each week this month, we'll be sharing tips on protecting yourself from email scams, phishing and malware. (Learn more at this Dal News story).

Today's tip: A lack of "tells" or easy giveaways does not rule out an email being a phishing scam. Yes, some phishing scams are unsophisticated asks for your password/login info/credit card details, but some are designed to look like they're coming from a legitimate organization. Remember: 1) Don't share your password via email, and 2) Don't click links in unsolicited email.

Avoiding phishing
    • Delete requests for your password
    • Don’t click links or open attachments in unexpected email
    • Be suspicious of any requests for financial information
    • Do not fill out forms embedded in email messages
    • Keep your web browser and plug-ins up-to-date
    • Avoid clicking links in private messages on social media sites that you were not expecting
    • If you think you have been phished, here’s how you can learn what to do about it.
