Grant Paid Job Opportunity: Dynamics of Human Motion Research Team (School of Physiotherapy)

The Dynamics of Human Motion Research Team (PIs: Dr. Cheryl Hubley-Kozey, Dr. Janie Astephen Wilson) at Dalhousie University seek a clinical gait research engineer who is a motivated, organized individual with experience in both adult and children’s clinical gait assessments and clinical research. The position is available for a term of one year (potentially renewable) that can commence immediately.

Salary: $50,000 -55,000/ year + benefits (Commensurate with qualifications)

Term: Fulltime for one- year (possibly renewable)

Qualifications: Minimum MSc in Biomedical Engineering or related field with a solid background in 3 D mechanics and electromyographic data, working knowledge of Matlab, excel, understanding of basic electronics, excellent organizational and documentation skills, computer skills and effective oral communication. 5 years’ experience in clinical research laboratory. Self-motivated.

Responsibilities:
The research engineer will be fully responsible for the overall day to day technical aspects of the laboratory specifically related to overseeing that data collected are valid and reliable as well as planning for improvements in technical aspects related to the data collections and research protocols. This includes both administrative as well as training components.
This person must be able to communicate effectively with researchers, trainees, clinicians and study participants alike. As well, the individual must be able to work in a professional manner and be familiar with requirements associated with human testing and research ethics.

Location: Dynamics of Human Motion Laboratory Dalhousie University
Terms: Full time, starting 01/09/2013 or when filled. The candidate would be working on joint projects between the Faculties of Health Professions, Medicine and Engineering and the Capital Health District Authority.

List of responsibilities:
• The maintenance and proper functioning of all equipment within the laboratory. This includes ensuring that equipment is properly running prior to all data collections taking place in the laboratory.
• The maintenance and upgrading of the data collection database.
• Creating appropriate back-ups to all data collected within the laboratory.
• Periodically, but not always, acting as the research engineer during data collection trials.
• Computer programming and statistical analysis as requested by Principal Investigators.
• Aiding the principal investigators in data processing, analysis and graphic representations for the preparation of conference abstracts and other knowledge translation initiatives.

Administrative:
• The ordering of laboratory supplies, new equipment and software required for the proper maintenance and running of the laboratory, and for all data collection procedures.
• The securing, distribution and management of all petty cash for laboratory and patient reimbursement needs.
• Preparing weekly written updates on progress, data collections (numbers, type, issues), and other weekly accomplishments to both Principal Investigators of the laboratory.
• Preparing clinical reports.
• Maintaining updated ethics approvals and consent forms and information for ethics yearly reports.

Training:
• Assisting students with computer programming and analysis when requested by Principal Investigators.
• Assisting with training of new lab personnel/students in data collection and processing.

Lab function:
• Ensuring that the clothing used in the data collection procedure is cleaned and available for data collection prior to each data collection.
• Contacting both Principal Investigators of the laboratory immediately when any problems with equipment, scheduling, subject data collection, processing, etc take place.
