Scheduled Halifax Water shutdown may result in boil‑water advisory on Dalhousie Campus

Posted by Facilities Management on June 18, 2013 in Facilities Management

In late June or early July, Halifax Water will be performing a scheduled shutdown of the Pockwock water transmission main line to allow for a major upgrade and replacement of approximately 1.7 kilometers of the transmission main. During this time, water supply from the Pockwock water transmission main line will be shut down for approximately 24 hours; Dalhousie’s water is supplied by this line.

During the shutdown, our water supply will not be interrupted but will be supplied by an alternate system of reservoirs, flows from Dartmouth via the MacDonald Bridge water line, and possibly the Chain Lake Emergency water supply.  As per Nova Scotia Environment (NSE) and the provincial Medical Officer of Health (MOH) guidelines, if the Chain Lake Emergency water supply is activated, a boil water advisory (BWA) may have to be issued.  If Chain Lake is activated, Dalhousie campus water users may notice:

· a change in water quality and colour
· increased chlorine taste
· reduced pH levels
· a reduction in water pressure

If Chain Lake is activated, research and/or teaching laboratories which have their own water purification system may consider not running their water purification system until normal water service resumes.

We have been assured that during this time, water will remain bacteriologically safe. However, we have also been asked to advise immune-suppressed individuals to consult their healthcare provider before drinking the water during this 24 hour period.

In advance of and during this work, Halifax Water will issue extensive communications to the general public outlining the project and its impact to customers supplied by Pockwock. This will get underway once Halifax Water has a firm date for the project start.

Please review your water requirements and prepare for the possibility of a 24 hour boil-water advisory. If you require assistance or further information from Facilities Management, please submit a service request using Famis self-serve.
