Writing Week for Graduate Students, June 10-14th
A little pressure never hurt anybody…
Are you finding it a challenge to start a writing project? Or finish one? Are you working on a paper for publication or perhaps you’re contemplating that first chapter of your dissertation or thesis? Whatever the situation, we thought that you might like a few days dedicated to writing in a supportive environment. The concept we will be using has been used successfully during the last four years here at Dalhousie: students register, show up each day at 9:00, go off to write, and then meet briefly at the end of the day (at 4:00) to give a one-minute progress report.
A new feature of the week focuses on lunch-time sessions on basic writing problems, using source material appropriately in academic work, and resourcing tools. (These sessions are optional!) The pressure of the end-of-day report is often enough to propel you into the writing with a little more commitment.
Sound interesting?
Writing Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9-4 and Friday 9-12 with a writing strategy talk by several recent PhD graduates from 12-1:30.
Registration: Contact Janice at Janice.eddington@dal.ca or call 494-7889 to register.
Space to Write: We don’t provide space to write, so plan to write in your offices or common areas (or at home for that matter). The reporting in (at 9:00 and at 4:00) is the critical element, not your choice of writing environments.
Opportunity for Coaching: Appointments with Writing Centre personnel are available during the week. This opportunity might be especially advisable for English Second Language students.
