Dave MacDonald, ITS, retires!
Please join us as we celebrate Dave MacDonald’s retirement, a member of the ITS family who has worked 39 years with us.
Time/Date: March 25, 2013, 3:30 – 5:00
Location: University Club Pub
This was Dave’s first and only full-time job, a testament of how he felt about working at Dalhousie University.
Dave has worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, as Operations Manager for the Data Centre. He has seen many changes come to pass in our industry. We’ve gone from a centralized computing environment that used 1000kg weight mainframe computers, to decentralized computing, and now the move to a virtualized world. We have gone from 16 hour Monday-Sunday staff supported data centre, to a Mon-Fri, 8 hour support.
Think about this, the jobs that now run overnight for Registrar and Finance, used to involve boxes and boxes of print cards for just one print job, each card representing 1 student or 1 transaction. Those backups we now take for granted used to mean writing to 10-15 magnetic tapes (each 2400 ft) just to accomplish one backup.
For many, you cannot possibly understand the changes Dave had to make to adapt to the IT world.
So come out to the celebration and hear more of the stories that I’m sure will unfold!
See you there!
