PART-TIME ACADEMIC POSTING

POSITION: One-Half Time Sessional Instructor; Diversity of Life I (Biology 2003); September 1, to December 31, 2013

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Biology

PAY RATE: $4,565.50 to $5,583 (to be prorated)

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The sessional instructor is responsible for approximately 1/2 of the lectures during the term, with emphasis on vertebrates; assisting students on an individual basis, general administration of the classes (handling student issues, submitting grades, etc.) and invigilating tests and examinations. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: The applicants will have an advanced degree in biology. Previous, recent teaching experience in the related discipline and demonstrated ability to lecture to a large class of undergraduate students would be a definite asset. First time applicants must provide the names of two referees.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Biology

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The sessional instructor will be giving lectures examining animal behaviour from an evolutionary perspective. Why do animals do what they do? Using the theory of natural selection as a basis, he/she will examine foraging, grouping patterns, territorial behaviour, parenting, mating behavior, social organization, aggression and co-operation. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: The applicants will have an advanced degree in biology and have prior, recent teaching experience in the field of behavioural ecology and demonstrated ability to lecture to over 100 undergraduate students. WORK ASSIGNMENT: The sessional instructor is responsible for lecturing on the various characteristics, special adaptations, evolution, ecosystem roles, and population biology of marine mammals. Evaluative material (examinations, mid-terms) will be given and marked. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: The applicants will possess a doctorate in biology with teaching and research experience in marine mammalogy.
