Food for Fines 2013

Posted by Dalhousie Libraries on February 7, 2013 in General Announcements

From Fri., Feb .8 until Sun., Feb. 17, you can reduce or clear your library fines with food donations. For every non-perishable food item donated, the Dalhousie Libraries will reduce your library fine by $2, to a maximum of $20. Food donations will be given to the Dalhousie Student Union Food Bank, Feed Nova Scotia (recommended items) and the Colchester Food Bank (for donations made at the MacRae Library on the Agricultural Campus).

“This program is a way for the Dalhousie Libraries to help students and give back to the community,” says Sandra Dwyer, head of circulation at the Killam Memorial Library. “Food for Fines started as a Dalhousie initiative more than ten years ago and since then it’s grown to include all of the Novanet libraries.”

Last year, Food for Fines waived $3,140.95 in overdue fines and collected 2,076 food items and $709.75 in cash donations provincewide. All of the Novanet libraries participate in Food for Fines, which includes all of the universities in Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Community College.

“Bring your donations of canned goods or other non-perishable foods to the circulation desk at any of the five Dalhousie Libraries during regular hours. We also accept cash,” says Sandra.
