Blog Highlight: Nancy Walker receives prestigious award from Autism Nova Scotia

Posted by School of Physiotherapy on December 20, 2012 in Blog Highlights

From the PTMatters blog, posted December 18, 2012:

Two weekends ago, our very own and much respected Physiotherapy instructor, Nancy Walker (pictured, middle back row) was recognized for her significant volunteer efforts. For many years Nancy has been an advocate for autistic children and their families.

Here is a portion of the award speech given by Ian Sutherland, who sits on the board of directors of Autism Nova Scotia. He best describes Nancy and the important work she does:

“I’m sure that many people in this room know Nancy, and many of you who don’t yet know her may well receive the benefit of her many contributions as a leader in the autism community.

Nancy is the mother of Ben James, a young man on the Autism Spectrum. Since the beginning, Nancy has been a powerful advocate for Ben, and has extended her passionate advocacy and tireless volunteer efforts to benefit the broader autism community.

Nancy founded the first Autism Summer Camp in Halifax in 2002 because she saw that children with autism were not supported in the traditional camp environments available in our communities. From the ground up and at every level, Nancy has done it all when it comes to running this Camp, typically volunteering more than 20 hours a week. Nancy has evolved her own camp over the last few years to become an Adolescent/Young Adult Autism Summer Recreation Program. This program offers a busy recreational experience, keeping the individuals engaged in appropriate physical and social activities throughout the day."
