The ripple effect: 7th annual Legacy Awards celebrate faculty and staff impact

Imagine a Convocation-like ceremony, but for celebrating achievements at work.

Dalhousie's annual Legacy Awards event fits the bill nicely, bringing the university community together to recognize faculty and staff for excellence in research, teaching, workplace safety, and service throughout their careers.

The Legacy Award itself — handcrafted by local artists — is a stylized water droplet signifying the ripple effect one person can make. First awarded in 2018 as part of Dalhousie’s 200th anniversary celebrations, the droplets have since been presented to more than 255 faculty and staff across campus.

“The answer that I keep coming back to [about what makes Dalhousie so remarkable] is that, here, we change what’s possible for the world in great ways," said Dalhousie President Kim Brooks at this year's celebration on Tuesday (Dec. 17).

"We do that by supporting people in realizing potential and possibilities in themselves that they might not otherwise have seen, known about, or been brave enough to explore,”  she said. “Every single person on this campus contributes to that positive difference and today we get to acknowledge and recognize more than 40 of you.”

Coming together

While Faculties, departments and units have their own award ceremonies throughout the year that contribute to their local cultures, Grace Jeffries-Aldridge, Dalhousie’s vice president, people and culture, emphasized the unique role of the Legacy Awards.

“They bring us together to highlight one another and showcase our strength as a Dalhousie community.”

In addition to the awards, the celebration featured a warm welcome from Elder Ann LaBillois and a student quartet from the Fountain School of Performing Arts.
