How I spent my summer: Lessons from Parliament Hill

When Schulich School of Law student Jaron Rykiss learned he was one of two students selected for a summer internship working for the Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on Parliament Hill, he was elated.

Although he had a passion for public service, having held the position of student union president during his undergraduate degree, Jaron says he didn’t fully anticipate how significant an impact the four-month experience would have on his future.

“Working alongside dedicated professionals who shared a commitment to justice was transformative,” explains Jaron. “This internship not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also clarified my career aspirations in legal advocacy and service.”

Diving deep

From his first days at the Department of Justice in Ottawa, he was engrossed in legal research, policy analysis, and operational support for critical government initiatives, gaining a wealth of practical experience. He also developed a deeper understanding of constitutional law, public policy, and administrative processes, while acquiring valuable insights into the workings of the justice system and its impact on Canadian society.

A highlight of Jaron’s internship was having the opportunity to contribute to the minister’s legislative research and legal affairs efforts. 

“I witnessed firsthand the intersection of law and policymaking and the profound influence these processes have on shaping our nation's future,” he shares. “Attending meetings and engagements alongside national leaders, including the Prime Minister and other members of the Canadian cabinet, provided a real-world perspective on the complexities and responsibilities inherent in public office.” 

An inspirational experience

His interactions with leaders from across Parliament Hill further emphasized the importance of effective leadership and informed decision-making in governance. These exchanges reinforced his appreciation for the role of law in addressing societal challenges and advancing equitable outcomes for all Canadians.

“I truly believe that the law is the best way to support our communities,” adds Jaron. “Looking ahead, I am inspired by the prospect of using my internship experience to effect positive change.”

As he enters his second year of law school, he is eager to apply the skills and perspectives gained this summer to his academic pursuits and to contribute to discussions on legal reform and justice initiatives in the classroom and beyond. 

“I am thankful for the support of my colleagues, mentors, and friends who all made this experience unforgettable,” he says. “I look forward to continuing to learn from the Attorney General’s office as a student intern in the fall.”
