On July 20, the streets of Halifax came alive with a vibrant display of rainbow colors as the annual Halifax Pride Parade took center stage.

Among the diverse groups participating, Dalhousie University's contingent embodied the institution's commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community. The event saw participation from various Dalhousie departments, student groups, and allies, all united under the banner of inclusion and respect.

Within the Dalhousie group, one story captured the essence of the day: Lin Yangsui (pictured above, left), an international student pursuing a Master of Digital Innovation at the university. For Yangsui, the parade represented more than just a celebration; it was a pivotal personal experience.

"Being able to show my full self in public like this for the first time is indescribable," Yangsui said Coming from a country where the 2SLGBTQIA+ community faces significant challenges, Yangsui found in Canada, and particularly at Dalhousie, the acceptance and support she had long yearned for.

Yangsui and her partner have been together for years. However, this marked their first time participating in a Pride parade. "I've dreamed of this moment," Yangsui's partner added. "To celebrate our love openly, without fear  it's liberating."

As the Dalhousie group marched through the streets alongside other participants, the spirit of Pride was palpable. Cheers echoed, flags waved, and the air was filled with a sense of unity and acceptance.

"The moment that truly touched me was when I saw the sincerity in the eyes of those cheering for us," Yangsui said. "It wasn't just polite applause or curious onlookers. These were people who genuinely celebrated our right to exist, to love, and to be proud of who we are. In that moment, I felt a level of acceptance I've never experienced before."

As the parade concluded, the impact of the day lingered. For Yangsui, her partner, and countless others from Dalhousie and beyond, this Pride parade was more than just an event  it was a celebration of love, and a testament to the power of an inclusive community.
