Men’s Hockey
In the men’s hockey team’s only action of the week, The Tigers fell 3-2 to the Acadia Axemen in overtime in Wolfville. The Tigers have taken massive strides towards success as they have only had one regulation loss in their last five contests.
It wasn’t a promising start for Dalhousie as they found themselves down 2-0 after two quick goals in the first period less than a minute apart.
The Tigers clawed their way back into the game slowly but surely. Phil Gadoury got the Tigers on the board 7:33 into the second period off a feed from Matt English. Gadoury now leads the team in scoring with six goals.
JP Harvey tied things at 2-2 for the Tigers half way through third period on a one-timer. Harvey’s game-tying goal sent the contest into overtime.
After watching a two goal lead disappear, the Axemen scored just 15 seconds into the overtime period, defeating the Tigers 3-2.
Once again the Tigers relied on stellar goaltending as Wendell Vye made 36 saves in his first start of the season.
The men’s hockey team sits in second last place but have a chance to move into a tie for fifth if they can capture a win over Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, November 11, at the Forum.
Men’s Soccer
It wasn’t the result they were looking for as Acadia handed the men’s soccer team a season-ending loss in the quarter-finals of the AUS championship. Matthew Berrigan scored two second half goals, giving the Axemen a 2-0 victory.
Jason Ross played well in his final AUS match stopping eight of the 10 shots he faced.
Berrigan put the Tigers away scoring a penalty kick in the 78th minute stretching the lead to two.
The UNB Varsity Reds went on to win the AUS championship beating the Cape Breton Capers 2-1.
It will be a transition year for the Tigers next season as they will lose the likes of Bezick Evraire, Sangmuk Choi, Mark Hagen, Zach Mbolekwa, Jason Ross and Zach Shaffelburg.
Women’s Ice Hockey
The once 1-4 Tigers have strung two wins together, beating the StFX X-Women on Saturday night in Antigonish. The 3-2 win moves the Tigers into a tie for fourth place in the AUS standings.
After conceding the all-important first goal to StFX, the Tigers went on to score three unanswered goals. Taylor Reichheld scored her second of the year five minutes into the game, knotting things up at 1-1.
Sarah MacNeil put the Tigers up 2-1 just a minute later with Rachel Carr and Jesse Rietveld receiving credit for the helpers.
After the scoring frenzy in the opening six minutes, the game went scoreless until Lisa Maclean got an insurance marker with under a minute to play.
Jenna Pitts scored for StFX with four seconds remaining to make it 3-2.
The Tigers next action comes on Sunday, November 15 as they host the Mount Allison Mounties at the Halifax Forum.
Women’s Basketball
The AUS basketball season got underway this weekend with the Dalhousie Tigers hosting a two-game set at the Dalplex against the UNB Varsity Reds. The ladies were able to get a win their home opener in dramatic fashion, beating the Varsity Reds 63-59 in overtime. It was a different story Saturday night as the Varsity Reds ran away with a 73-45 victory.
The two sides were virtually tied all game long on Friday night as no one seemed to be able to create a substantial lead. In the overtime frame, Dalhousie was able to put four quick points up and would hold the margin until the buzzer.
Fifth-year senior Tessa Stammberger proved how important she will be this season filling the stats sheet with 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
On Saturday night, the Varsity Reds were hitting shots from everywhere including eight three pointers. The Tigers hung around for the first half, finding themselves down by two at the break but a 16-0 run by UNB to start the fourth quarter put things way out of reach.
Once again it was Stammberger leading the way with 24 points.
The Tigers are in another two-game series next weekend when they host Memorial University.
Men’s Basketball
What a weekend it was for the men’s basketball team who lived up to their name as the “comeback kids” erasing a 20-point deficit on Saturday and an eight point deficit on Friday against the UNB Varsity Reds. The defending AUS champions are now 2-0 siting a top the AUS standings.
The Tigers were without floor general, Ritchie Kanza Mata who was given the weekend off with a concussion. It was a team effort from Coach Plato’s team as all 12 players received playing time.
On Friday night it was a low scoring affair as the Tigers managed to pull of a 68-63 victory. In a game that saw five lead changes, the Tigers were able to get hot in the second half to pull off the win in front of a packed Dalplex.
Kashrell Lawrence led the team with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Saturday night’s game was an absolute thriller as the Tigers found themselves down by as many as 20 in the second quarter and rallied back to win 84-82.
Sven Stammberger was a machine dropping 40 points and hitting some crucial buckets down the stretch.
The Tigers now 2-0 will host the Memorial Sea-Hawks (2-0) next week in a huge two-game set.
Women's Volleyball
The Tigers have maintained their winning streak another week. The team has played 8 games so far, both pre-season and regular season, but they haven't lost yet. This weekend was no exception.
On Friday, November 6, the team played against the Saint Mary's Huskies in an away game and came out with a 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-13, 25-10) win over the Huskies.
The opening two sets showed quite the exchange of points between the teams as they fought to keep the lead from each other. Dalhousie came back out in the final sets to take the win. At one point in the third set, they had a 13 point lead before finishing the set at 25-13.
Anna Dunn-Suen led the kills for the game with 15 throughout the game. Marisa Mota held the most digs for the game at 16. As a team, the Tigers also had the most blocks (9-6) which helped secure their win.
The Tigers now stand at 2-0 and will play Acadia (0-3) on Sunday, November 15 in their home opener event at 2pm.
