Women’s Hockey
The Tigers posted a 1-1 record over the week, picking up their second win of the season against the UPEI Panthers. In the first few games of the season the ladies struggled to score but the sticks have heated up now as the Tigers have scored 10 goals in their last three games.
On Wednesday night the Tigers hosted the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Forum. Saint Mary’s came out on top with a 3-1 win. Dalhousie controlled puck possession for the majority of the night but could never translate it into quality scoring opportunities.
Saint Mary’s opened the scoring at 14:27 in the first period. Breanna Lanceleve found the back of the net on a feed from Hayley Halilihan & Laura Polak.
The Huskies took the 1-0 lead into the dressing after one period of play.
Caitlyn Manning brought the Huskies total to two on the power play half way through the second period. The 2-0 SMU lead would hold till late in the third when Rachel Carr ripped a one-timer to the back of the net.
The comeback was short lived as SMU scored an empty netter seconds later.
UPEI was in town on Saturday as the two sides faced off at the Civic Centre. Sarah Robichaud continued her hot start scoring two more goals. Robichaud is now tied for the AUS scoring race with 5 goals.
UPEI and Dalhousie traded goals in the first period, with Victoria Macintosh netting the Tigers marker. The 1-1 tie would last until the third period.
Robichaud was able to capitalize on a penalty shot giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Taylor Reichheld netted an insurance marker in the final minutes and then Robichaud finished things off with an empty netter.
After the 4-1 victory the Tigers improve to 2-4. Their next action comes on Saturday, November 7th at StFX.
Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team had a two-game home stand this weekend hosting the UdeM Aigles Bleus and the St. Thomas Tommies.
On Friday night UdeM was able to score four unanswered goals to beat the Tigers 4-2.
Phil Gadoury opened up the scoring three minutes into the second period on the power play. After hopping out to the 1-0 lead Moncton went on to score four straight goals completely deflating the Tigers.
It was too little too late when Tyler Noseworthy scored shorthanded for the Tigers with 20 seconds to go in the third period.
After the 4-2 to loss on Friday night, the Tigers bounced back with a 5-1 statement win over the St. Thomas Tommies.
Gadoury netted a hat trick for the Tigers en route to their second win of the season.
Jackson Playfair got the ball rolling for the Tigers scoring off a feed from Tanner Williams and Gadoury. The Tommies would counter before the end of the period as Colin Martin scored in the final minutes of the frame on the power play.
The Tigers went on to score four unanswered goals putting things out of reach for the Tommies.
The Tigers are now 2-4-1 and sit sixth in the AUS standings and will look to move up the ladder when they play Acadia in Wolfville on Wednesday.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team kicked off the 2015-2016 regular season with a 3-2 win over the Acadia Axewomen on Friday night. The Tigers took the match 3-2 in a five-set thriller (25-18, 14-25, 25-14, 20-25, 15-10).
Courtney Baker, Anna Dunn-Suen and Mieke DuMont led the offence with 15, 11 and 10 kills respectively. On the defensive side Marisa Mota had 24 digs in the winning effort.
The Tigers are 1-0 to start the season and will play at Saint Mary’s on Friday night.
Cross Country
The women’s cross country team was able to come away with their third straight AUS championship over the weekend while the men’s team grabbed second behind StFX.
The women’s team took six of the top seven spots on Saturday at O’Dell Park looking as dominate as ever.
Colleen Wilson grabbed first place with a time of 21:46 followed by teammates Michelle Ready (21:59), Jenna MacDonald (22:32), Kayte Kowal (22:37), and Emily Clarke (22:49), culminating in a perfect race, the first in AUS history. The Tigers placed all seven runners in the top ten.
On the men’s side, Matt McNeil continued his undefeated streak grabbing gold with a time of 31:14 and was trailed by seven X-Men. Will Russel (32:42), Jake Wing (32:50), and Nick Wood (33:05) all squeezed into the top 10.
Matt McNeil and Colleen Wilson both received Athlete of the Year honours while head coach Rich Lehman received coach of the year for his efforts with the women’s team.
Women’s Soccer
After a 0-0 draw against StFX and a 1-0 loss to Cape Breton in the final weekend of the AUS regular season, the women’s soccer team failed to qualify for the post-season. The squad finished in a tie for sixth place but last place Moncton received the sixth and final playoff spot as the championship host.
On Saturday, the Tigers were in Antigonish playing the X-Women. The Tigers outshot the X-Women but couldn’t find the back of the net in the must-win game.
Tilda Hadley got the start in the Dalhousie net and was perfect with 5 saves. Across the pitch was Nicole MacDonald who stopped all 10 shots sent her way.
On Sunday the Tigers travelled to Cape Breton where they suffered a season ending 1-0 loss.
Keona Simmonds scored the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
The Tigers posted a 4-6-3 record on the season, just missing the playoffs.
Men’s Soccer
In the final weekend of the AUS regular season, the men’s soccer team went 1-1 with a win over StFX and a loss to Cape Breton. The Tigers finish the regular season with 21 points, good for the final playoff spot.
On Saturday the Tigers battled with StFX to a 3-2 victory, eliminating the X-Men from the playoffs and clinching a spot for the Tigers.
The two teams traded goals back-and-forth for the entirety of the game. Bezick Evraire came up clutch once again for the Tigers scoring his second goal of the game in the 88th minute giving the Tigers the 3-2 win.
On Sunday it was another 3-2 decision but the Tigers were on the losing end as the first place Cape Breton Capers came out on top.
Zach Mbolekwa scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute giving Dalhousie the early lead. Cape Breton scored shortly after in the 28th and 35th minute stealing the lead from the Tigers.
Aiden Klassen was able to tie things up in the 55th minute with a goal of his own. Cape Breton would not go away though as Justin Maheu scored the game winner in the 65th minute.
The Tigers head into the playoffs as the sixth seed and with face third seed Acadia on Thursday, November 5 in an elimination game. This season the Tigers went 0-1-1 against Acadia.
Swimming
Both the men’s and women’ swimming teams were able to come away with team wins at the Jack Scholz Invitational at Acadia over the weekend. The women’s team put up 270.5 points while the men recorded 340 points.
