Cross Country
The cross country teams were in Guelph, Ontario over the weekend racing in the New Balance Vic Matthews Open. Dalhousie Tigers runner Matt McNeil, took top spot in the men’s 10km race in a time of 31:52 winning by a 20second margin, grabbing his second consecutive win of the season. McNeil proved that he can compete with the best in the nation, finishing a head of the 96 runner field.
The University of Guelph won the team event placing four runners in the top 10 earning 33 points. Laval (49) finished second and was followed by the University of Toronto (109). Dalhousie placed fourth with 114 points. Will Russell snuck into the top 20 with a time of 33:25 while every Dalhousie runner was inside the top 50.
Colleen Wilson and Ellen Chappell continued their strong start to the 2015 season placing fifth and eighth, respectively in the women’s 6km race. Michelle Reddy placed ninth, giving the Tigers three of the top 10 spots, good for second in the team standings. The Tigers went into the race as the fourth ranked team in the country.
The Tigers head to Antigonish this weekend for the StFX Invitational on Saturday.
Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team kicked off their pre-season at the Halifax Forum on Friday night against the Saint Mary’s Huskies but did not get the result they were looking for. Saint Mary’s jumped out to an early first-period lead and never let up, downing the Tigers 6-1.
Ben Duffy scored just four minutes into the game for the Huskies followed by a Michael D'Orazio tally shortly after. The lone Dalhousie goal came in the first period from Fabian Walsh on the power play. After one period of the play the Tigers were in reach trailing 2-1.
Saint Mary’s went on to score four unanswered goals in the second period for a final score of 6-1.
The pre-season continues for the men’s hockey team next Friday as they take on St. Thomas in Springhill, N.S.
Men’s Soccer
The Tigers men’s soccer team came into the weekend with a 1-1-0 record after a 7-0 win over Mount Allison and a 3-0 loss to Acadia at Wickwire Field last weekend. On Saturday the boys were in Saint John, New Brunswick, battling the UNB Varsity Reds who went undefeated in the 2014 campaign on their way to their second straight AUS title. The Varsity Reds struggled in the opening weekend dropping their first two contests.
The Tigers were unable to get on the board Saturday afternoon for the second straight game, falling 3-0 to Oliver Jones and the Varsity Reds. Jones netted two goals in the contest and was named player of the game for the UNB side. Robert Park made it 3-0 in the 89th minute scoring on a penalty kick.
Dalhousie keeper, Jason Ross had another impressive outing turning away nine of the 12 shots he faced.
On Sunday the Tigers were slated against UdeM Aigles Bleus who came into the match still in search of their first win. Dalhousie was able to get the monkey off their back after being held scoreless in two straight games, with a 5-0 win.
Bezick Evraire continued his dominate start to the 2015 season, netting three goals against the Aigles Bleus, bringing his season total to five and moving him into fifth in the CIS scoring race.
The Tigers headed into the dressing room after 45 minutes with a 1-0 lead after a Evraire found the back of the net in the 27th minute. Dalhousie opened up the floodgates in the second half scoring, four goals in a twenty-minute span off the boots of Jonny Doucett, Freddy Bekkers, and Evraire (2) giving them a 5-0 win.
After splitting the weekend set, the men’s soccer team improves to 2-2-0, placing them in a 3-way tie for third in the AUS standings. The Tigers next action comes Friday when they face cross town rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies (1-0-3) at Huskie stadium. Kickoff is at 7:15pm.
Women’s Soccer
After losing the first two games of the season, the women’s soccer team had a bounce back weekend recording four points with a draw and a win. Goaltending may have looked like an issue for the Tigers early on after giving up nine goals in two games, but Katie Morgan but that theory to bed with two clean sheets over the weekend.
The Tigers fought to a 0-0 draw on Saturday against the Varsity Reds in a contest that saw multiple chances on both sides of the pitch. Morgan made three saves in the match while Amanda Bowles received player of the game honours for Dalhousie.
The women’s soccer team was looking to come away with their first win of the season had to settle with a draw against last season’s AUS championship runner-ups.
They got their first win of the season against Moncton with a 4-0 victory on the road on Sunday. Fifth-year back, Kristy McGregor-Bales was not going to let the Tigers leave New Brunswick with out a win, scoring two goals in the win.
McGregor-Bales got the Tigers trending in the right direction scoring in the 25th minute. Scarlett Smith and Victoria Parkinson added their own tallies before the half was over giving Dalhousie a comfortable 3-0 win heading into the second half. McGregor-Bales scored the last marker of the game in the 81st minute.
The Tigers will look to keep the ball rolling as they face their Halifax rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies on the road Friday night.
