Men's Basketball

The Tigers (8-8) have dropped to .500 on the season after going 1-2 this week. After a win in a crucial four-point game at home against Acadia, the Tigers went winless in two games on the road against the Cape Breton Capers. The Tigers have now lost four of their last five games as they slip to fourth in the AUS, though they've clinched a spot in the AUS playoffs.

On Tuesday, the Tigers were down 21-14 after a quarter of play against the Acadia Axemen but they clawed back and had a big fourth quarter to down the Axemen 85-77. Kashrell Lawrence went 8-11 from the field and led the Tigers with 26 points, six rebounds and three steals. Jarred Reid was hot from beyond the arc, shooting 5-9 from deep enroute to a 20 point performance.

On Friday, the Tigers ran into a Cape Breton team that simply couldn't miss as the Capers shot an astounding 58.6% from the field, defeating the Tigers 91-64. Lawrence led the Tigers again offensively, with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sven Stammberger had 11 points while veteran John Traboulsi chipped in 10 points off the bench.

In an attempt to finish out the weekend with a win, Lawrence had yet another strong game with 27 points on 11-17 shooting, but it wasn't enough as the Capers edged the Tigers 77-71. Ritchie Kanza Mata added 11 points and six assists.

The Tigers have a big weekend ahead of them as they play two four-point games in a five-day stretch. On Tuesday they'll travel to Antigonish to take on the last-place StFX X-Men (4-12), and then they'll host the second-place UNB Varsity Reds (12-4) on Saturday.

Women's Basketball

The women's team had a rough weekend too after they went 1-2. Their time atop the AUS standings was short-lived as they slipped to third-place in the AUS. League-leading scorer Courtney Thompson averaged 31 points over the three-game stretch.

On Tuesday, Courtney Thompson dropped a career-high 37 points but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell 75-72 against the last-place Acadia Axewomen. The Tigers were down 18-12 after the first quarter, and despite a late push in the fourth quarter, they fell just short as the Axewomen came away with the win. Tessa Stammberger added 16 points and seven boards in the loss.

On Friday the Tigers traveled to Sydney to take on the Cape Breton Capers. This time, it was the Tigers who shot out to an early lead, as they held an 18-7 advantage after ten minutes of play. Thompson had another strong game as she had a 29 point, five rebound and four steal performance in the Tigers 72-52 victory. Stammberger had another solid performance with 15 points and five rebounds, while Kristy Moore chipped in 11 points.

Looking to follow up their big win with another strong performance, the Tigers squared off against the Capers again on Saturday. After the Capers held a slight one point lead after the first quarter, the Tigers allowed the Capers to score 21 points in the second quarter, opening up a big lead on the Tigers going into halftime. The Tigers couldn't regroup after the tough first half and went on to lose 86-69.

Stammberger had another big game with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Ainsley MacIntyre added 15 points, while Rebecca Nuttall had ten of her own.

The Tigers have a big weekend ahead of them as they play two four-point games in a five day stretch against teams in the bottom half of the standings. On Tuesday they'll travel to Antigonish to take on the StFX X-Women (4-12), and then they'll host the second-place UNB Varsity Reds (7-9) on Saturday.

Men's Hockey

The Tigers may have dropped the last round of the battle of Halifax last week, but they ended the season on a positive note with a strong victory against the second-place Acadia Axemen on the road.

On Wednesday, the Tigers squared off against the CIS No. 5 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies. The Huskies mounted a 3-0 lead in the first period, as they poured 17 shots on Corbin Boes in the first 20 minutes of play. Mike Evelyn notched his fifth goal of the season in the second period, but it wasn't enough to stop the bleeding as the Tigers fell 7-1.

On Friday, the Tigers took on the CIS No. 3 ranked Acadia Axemen in their final game of the season. Andrew Rieder scored his second goal of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead early, and Evelyn notched his second goal in as many games to make it a two-goal lead. The Axemen answered back with one of their own late in the first period, but the Tigers held the 2-1 lead heading into the second period.

Acadia tied the game seven minutes into the second, but Andrew Langan answered back eight minutes later as the Tigers regained the lead after the puck deflected off an Acadia defensemen. JP Harvey added to the Tigers lead a couple minutes later to add some insurance to the lead as the Tigers went ahead 4-2 heading into the third period.

Harvey added another goal in the third to give the Tigers a comfortable 5-2 lead. Wendell Vye would go on to make 50 saves as the Tigers pulled out the improbable 5-2 win.

The Tigers end the season with a 7-20-1 record, which is more than double the wins they recorded last season.

Women's Hockey

The Tigers split a pair of games this weekend, dropping a heart-breaker to Saint Mary's and then emphatically beating the league-leading StFX X-Women at home.

On Friday, the Huskies shot out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but Victoria MacIntosh trimmed the deficit to one as they teams headed into the first intermission. Jesse Reitveld and Courtney Sheedy scored within a three minute span in the second period to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The Huskies answered back with two of their own as the Tigers trailed 4-3 going into the third.

The Huskies added another goal early in the third, but the Lisa MacLean and Morgan Kidney scored within two minutes of each other to tie the game up at five goals apiece with ten minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the tie would prove to be short-lived as the Huskies scored just 2:30 later to give themselves a 6-5 victory. Jessica Severeyns made 31 saves in the loss.

On Saturday, the Tigers took on the first-place StFX X-Women at home. Marita Alfieri and Sarah Robichaud scored in the first period as the Tigers established a 2-0 lead, outshooting the X-Women 18-10.

Maggie Beaton added her seventh goal of the season early in the second period to extend the lead to three goals. Victoria MacIntosh scored on the power play midway through the period, and Alfieri added her second of the game as the Tigers had a 5-0 lead heading into the third period.

The X-Women would add a goal in the third, but Morgan Kidney added her second goal in as many games as the Tigers crushed the X-Women 6-1. Severeyns came up big between the pipes again for the Tigers, registering 38 saves in the win.

The Tigers will finish out their season on the road against the Mount Allison Mounties. Puck drop is set for 6:30pm.

Swimming

It was another successful AUS season for the Tigers as both the men's and women's teams came away victorious at the 2015 Subway AUS Championship held at the Dalplex this weekend. It was the men's 17th consecutive title, while the women have now won 14 straight.

The women's team finished with 466 points in the meet, while the men's team finished with 394.

First-year Tigers swimmer Phoebe Lenderyou set three AUS records in the meet, in the 50m back, 100m fly and 200m IM. The 100m fly record had been held since 2002, while the 200m IM record was set way back in 1994.

For Tigers coach Lance Cansdale, it was a very successful weekend overall.

"The best thing about the weekend for us was the fact that we came in unrested and unshaven, and we made a lot of personal bests and we raced well," says Cansdale. "I think it showed the depth of our team and I think it sets us up very well for two weeks from now, which is our primary focus."

Women’s Volleyball

The Tigers finished the regular season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 30-28) victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies to cap-off an eight-game winning streak heading into playoffs.

First-year left side hitter Mieke DuMont had a game-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs and a stuff block in the match. Anna Dunn-Suen added 11 kills and nine digs of her own, while libero Marisa Mota collected a game-high 25 digs.

The win secured the Dalhousie second place in AUS standings, to give the Tigers a first round bye in this weekend’s Subway AUS Championship this weekend at UNB. The Tigers take on the winner of the Acadia/UNB quarter-final in Saturday’s second semifinal at 7:00pm. You can watch online at www.AUSTv.ca

Men's Volleyball

It's a good time to be a volleyball Tiger.

This past week, fifth-year outside hitter and AUS kills leader Bryan Duquette was named the AUS MVP, while second-year Adam Sandeson was named the AUS libero of the year. Head coach Dan Ota was also named the AUS coach of the year.

Duquette was also named to the AUS all-star team, along with teammates Jonathan Macdonald and Kristen O'Brien.

The Tigers also played the first game of the AUS championship at home against the UNB Varsity Reds on Saturday.

They had little trouble dispatching the Varsity Reds in the first game of the championship, cruising to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-24, 25-17) victory. Duquette had a team-high 10 kills to go along with eight digs in the win, while Sandeson had a game-high 13 digs. Fellow all-star Kristen O'Brien registered seven kills and seven digs.

With the win, the Tigers are now just one win away from winning their second consecutive AUS championship. They'll travel to Fredericton to do battle against the Varsity Reds next Saturday, with action getting underway at 2:00pm. You can catch it online at www.AUStv.ca.
