Congratulations to Peter Dykhuis (director) upon his appointment as President of the University and College Art Galleries Association of Canada. This association provides a national voice for its membership, composed of university and college faculty, independent scholars, and other art professionals in the fields of art, art history, and visual culture.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Congratulations to John Baxter (English) who has won the fourth Joseph M. Schwartz Memorial Essay Prize awarded by the Renascence journal. Dr. Baxter’s essay, “Perilous Stuff: Poems of Religious Meditation,” was published in the spring 2010 issue of Renascence. His essay will soon be displayed in the Renascence webpage as an example of their best scholarship.

Congratulations to Ron Tetreault (English and European Studies) upon being named the recipient of the Society of Digital Humanities’ Outstanding Achievement Award, in recognition of his work on Lyrical Ballads: An Electronic Scholarly Edition.

Congratulations to Lori Turnbull (Political Science) and the late Peter Aucoin (along with Mark D. Jarvis, University of Victoria) upon winning the 14th annual Donner Prize for the best book on Canadian public policy for, Democratizing the Constitution:  Reforming Responsible Government. The Donner Prize was established in 1998 to reward “excellence and innovation in Canadian public policy thinking, writing and research,” and carries with it a $50,000 prize. 

Faculty of Dentistry

Congratulations to the Faculty of Dentistry upon being honoured with the William J. Gies Award for Achievement (Academic Dental Institution) – the first Canadian dental school to win the honour. The Gies Awards are presented by the philanthropic arm of the American Dental Education Association, and honour individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation, and achievement in dental education, research and leadership.

Faculty of Engineering

Congratulations to Joshua Leon (dean, Faculty of Engineering) upon winning the 2011-12 Canadian Federation of Engineering Students’ appreciation award for his support for Dalhousie Engineering Students. The award recognizes significant contributions to the CFES from a non-student and is presented annually to a university staff or faculty member, someone from industry or from another organization.

Faculty of Graduate Studies

Congratulations to Sarah Keeshan (student, MA History) whose thesis, “The Mind’s Eye: Reconstructing the Historian’s Semantic Matrix through Henry Knighton’s Account of the Peasants’ Revolt, 1381,” was the unanimous selection of the award committee for the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools Master’s Thesis Award 2011-2012. Ms. Keeshan received her $1,000 award at the annual meeting’s award luncheon held on April 20.

Faculty of Health Professions

Congratulations to Carolyn King and Alison McDonald (Physiotherapy), joint recipients of the 2012 Congress Bursary for Volunteers. This bursary provides funding for Congress attendance for Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association (NSPA) members who are (or have been) active volunteer contributors to the Association. The Congress Bursary is intended to acknowledge this commitment and contribution to the profession, and reward a volunteer for their sacrifice of time and energy. Carolyn King was also successfully nominated by the NSPA Awards Committee for the CPA Life Membership Award. She will receive her Life Membership Award at CPA Congress in May 2012 in Saskatoon. The CPA Life Membership Award recognizes physiotherapists who have provided outstanding service of long duration to the profession and the Association.

Congratulations to Sandy Rennie (Physiotherapy), 2012 NSPA Award of Excellence recipient. Dr. Rennie received the award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the physiotherapy profession in Nova Scotia, as an inspirational role model, teacher, mentor, and leader.

Congratulations to Gail Wainwright (Physiotherapy) who was successfully nominated by the NSPA Awards Committee for the CPA Mentorship Award. Ms. Wainwright will receive her Mentorship Award at CPA Congress in May. The CPA Mentorship Award recognizes physiotherapists who, through their inspiration and support, are actively engaged in the mentorship of other physiotherapists and act as role models for professionalism and volunteerism.

Faculty of Science

Congratulations to Randall Martin (Physics and Atmospheric Science) upon winning the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship. This $250,000 award will allow Dr. Martin to continue improving his estimates of ground-level pollution, get a better understanding of the effects of human activity on climate, and gain insight into the emissions to the atmosphere of different trace gases and particles. Up to six Steacie Fellowships are awarded annually to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising young scientists and engineers who are faculty members of Canadian universities. With this award, Dr. Martin joins an elite group, including two recent Dalhousie winners, Boris Worm (2011) and Andrew J. Roger (2007).
 
Congratulations to Dalhousie men’s volleyball player Daniel You (student, Biology) winner of the 2012 James Bayer Memorial Scholarship Award, Atlantic University Sport’s most prestigious award. Mr. You is a three-time Academic All-Canadian and Dean’s List member. Mr. You was presented his award at the 58th Annual Dalhousie University Black and Gold Athletic Banquet.

Congratulations to Njal Rollinson (PhD student, Biology), who took first place for his presentation at the 22nd Science Atlantic Aquaculture and Fisheries Conference held recently at Mount Allison University. Mr. Rollison won in the Aquaculture & Fisheries, graduate category.

Congratulations to Karissa Milbury (student, Biology), who took first place for her presentation at the 22nd Science Atlantic Aquaculture and Fisheries Conference held recently at Mount Allison University. Ms. Milbury won in the Biology, oral category.

Congratulations to Mark Higgins (student, Earth Sciences) who won the Best Undergraduate Student oral presentation at the Atlantic Geoscience Society Annual Meeting held earlier this year. Mr. Higgins’ topic concerned tracking the source and travel distance of gold particles in placer deposits in the Yukon. (Supervisor: Mike Young)

Congratulations to Derrick Midwinter (student, Earth Sciences) who was runner-up in the Undergraduate Student Oral Presentation at the Atlantic Geoscience Society Annual Meeting held earlier this year. Mr. Midwinter’s topic concerned the Triassic Bjorne Formation of the Arctic Islands and its burial history and hydrocarbon potential. (Supervisor:  Martin Gibling)

Congratulations to Janice Allen (student, Earth Science) who won the Best Student Poster award at the Atlantic Geoscience Society Annual Meeting held earlier this year. Ms Allen’s topic concerned modelling of salt tectonics. (Supervisor: Chris Beaumont)

Congratulations to Zabrina Prescott (student, Biology) who won the Best Graduate Student Presentation award at the Atlantic Geoscience Society Annual Meeting held earlier this year. Ms Prescott’s presentation was entitled, “A microbial mat and associated trace fossil assemblage in a river channel at Coal Mine Point, Joggins, Nova Scotia: Paleoenvironmental significance and evidence of a previously unrecorded transgression.” (Supervisor: Brian Hall)

Congratulations to Theodore Kolokolnikov (Mathematics), winner of the 2012 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. Mr. Kolokolnikov was given this award for his highly influential contributions to the study of pattern formation in systems governed by nonlinear differential equations. The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the CAIMS Annual Meeting in Toronto in June 2012.
