This weekend was full of Tigers action, both at home and on the road.

Hockey

On Friday night the women’s team hosted CIS fourth-place StFX in their annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) fundraising game. Fielding Montgomery scored the first goal of the game for Dal, giving them the early lead. With the game tied after the first, the Tigers played hard, but the X-Women pulled away in the second period. Miranda McMillan scored two for the black and gold, keeping the game close, but Dal was unable to tie it up in the dying seconds. The final score was 4-3 StFX.

In New Brunswick over the weekend, the men’s team gathered two wins, starting with a 7-4 victory over St. Thomas on Friday. Brendon MacDonald was the Subway player of the game, scoring two goals for Dal. Jordan Villeneuve-Gagne, Shea Kewin, Brett Theberge, Benjamin Breault, and Daniel Bartek each added goals for the black and gold. After falling 5-1 to AUS fourth place Moncton the previous weekend, the Tigers came out strong in Saturday’s game and earned a revengeful 5-1 win against Moncton. David MacDonald scored two goals for Dal, while Villeneuve-Gagne, Kewin, and Theberge added one each.

This weekend the women’s team travels to New Brunswick to play Moncton and St. Thomas. The men’s team will host Acadia this Wednesday and Saint Mary’s on Friday, both games starting at 7 p.m. They will also face Saint Mary’s at the Forum on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Basketball

In the women’s basketball CBCF fundraiser game last Saturday, Dal fell short against AUS first-place SMU 73-58. The Tigers played great defence, but the Huskies were unstoppable at the perimeter, scoring eight three-pointers. Tessa Stammberger, with 15 points, was player of the game for Dal, while Alex Legge added 10 points for the Tigers. Cailin Crosby and Anna von Maltzahn crashed the boards hard for 10 and 14 rebounds, respectively.

Fresh off two wins in Newfoundland, the men’s basketball team looked to make a move in the standings as they took on Saint Mary’s on Saturday. After a close game, Dal came out on top and earned an important four-point victory. Robert Nortmann picked up a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while William Yengue and player of the game Alexander Arthur added 14 points each.

The basketball teams both travel to StFX on Wednesday, but are back home on Saturday to host a double header against UPEI, with games at 6 p.m and 8 p.m.

Volleyball

After winning the Brandon Conferences of Canada title over the break, the women’s team was eager to get back to AUS action, but fell short to Cape Breton on Friday, 3-0. Leading the effort for Dal, Maggie Li and Tara Gowan had seven and six kills, respectively, while Lauren Smith had 10 digs. Looking to redeem themselves on Saturday, the black and gold swept StFX in three sets. Louise Facca led the offence with 17 kills, while on defense Raessa Lalani and Smith had 16 and 14 digs, respectively.

Next, the team will host Acadia at 7 p.m. on Friday, and Moncton at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Swimming

In women’s and men’s swimming, Dal won top team points at the NS Senior Swim Meet hosted by Acadia. Keishia Mills won all three breaststroke events for the women and Kit Moran won the same three events for the men. Chris Reith won the 400m and 1500m freestyle events, with his 1500m effort winning the high point award for the meet. The swim teams travel to UPEI this weekend for an invitational meet.
