It’s no joke. Starting April 1, Dalhousie is entering into a car-share venture with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Dalhousie will have access to two “WeCars”—available on campus for an hour’s jaunt to the grocery store, a meeting out of town or a weekend getaway. Aside from the financial benefits and convenience, car share programs can help to reduce the number of cars owned and used daily.
"It's just one strategy in our comprehensive transportation plan," says Rochelle Owen, director of Dalhousie's Office of Sustainability. "It's another way to encourage people to leave their cars at home—and if they do need a car for a meeting or whatever—they can use one of these."
To get access to the WeCars, Dalhousie employees and students over the age of 21 will be able to register as members of a the car-share program. Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s WeCars will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for business and personal use for a $10 hourly fee. Interested participants can register online at wecar.com.
Once registered, car-share members will receive a membership card with which they can reserve one of the WeCars by logging in and providing their Banner ID. To be eligible for a business membership, Dalhousie employees must have a Dalhousie Purchasing Card (P-Card). The P-Card can be obtained through the Purchasing Department.
Employees are encouraged to speak with their supervisors about this opportunity. Business Memberships are available to all employees of Dalhousie ages 18 and up, providing they have a valid driver’s license.
Separate personal memberships are also available to Dalhousie employees, as well as to students 21 years and older. Unlike the business memberships, the personal memberships require a $45 annual membership fee.
WeCars—a Chevy Malibu hybrid and a Ford Fiesta—will be parked in specially reserved parking spaces on campus.
