Tigers' highlight reel

- February 8, 2011

This past Friday, the men’s hockey team traveled to Moncton to face off against Les Aigles Bleus. The game was close, but the Tigers could not get ahead of Universite de Moncton and fell 4-3. Forwards Pierre-Alexandre Vandall and Trevor Mackenzie scored the first two Dal goals. Assistant Captain Benjamin Breault netted the third goal.

On Saturday, the men earned an important victory, coming from behind to crush St. Thomas 6-4. Mr. Breault led his team by netting the first goal and Ryan Stoddard scored the second. In the third period, defensemen Jacob Johnston found the back of the net, forward Trevor Mackenzie tallied two goals and Mr. Breault netted his second of the night.

Men’s hockey will host Acadia at Dalhousie Memorial Arena on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., UPEI on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and UNB on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday night’s game will be a Residence Rocks the Rink event. Residence students are challenged to show their best Tigers spirit. Prizes will be given to the first 50 residence students to arrive and intermission will feature a special shoot out between the 2011 Charity Cup Big Horns and Trojans. It is also Faculty and Staff Friday so all Dalhousie faculty and staff (plus up to three friends) can get into the game for free.

Saturday, the men’s hockey program will recognize alumni Brian Gualazzi at the 1980s Decade night as they retire jersey number nine in his honour.

Women’s hockey faced St. Thomas University in Fredericton on Saturday and outscored the Tommies 4-1 to bring home the victory. Robyn Nicholson played an exceptional game netting two goals. Fielding Montgomery and Laura Shearer also scored for Dal. This weekend the women will travel to PEI on Friday to take on the Panthers and on Saturday they will be at Mount Allison to face the Mounties.

Women’s volleyball had their last home game on Friday and played exceptionally well to beat St. FX 3-1. Raeesa Lalani led her team ferociously with 17 kills and six blocks. Second-year Marlee Powers also stood out as she ended the game with 11 kills against the X-women. On the road for the remainder of the season, the women will play MUN on Friday and Saturday this weekend.

Tigers basketball was busy this past weekend with doubleheaders versus St. FX and UNB at Dalplex.

Men’s basketball took down the X-Men 90-70 on Saturday. Leading the team with points were Simon Farine (31) and Joseph Schow (21). Sunday’s game was equally successful as the Tigers crushed UNB 88-54. Veterans Simon Farine (21), Juleous Grant (17) and Joseph Schow (14) led their team in points.

Women’s basketball did not enjoy the same success as the men did. On Saturday the X-Women outscored the Tigers 89-57. On Sunday the women had a much closer game, but were ultimately defeated 94-83.

Both Dal basketball teams will host Acadia at Dalplex for a doubleheader Wednesday night at 6 and 8 p.m.

Tigers swimming will be hosting the AUS swim championships this upcoming weekend, February 11-13, at Dalplex. The Dal women’s team has been the AUS champions since 2002 and the men’s team has held the title since 1999. Preliminary races take place daily at 10 a.m. and final races go each night from 6 to 8 p.m.

Simon Farine is a consistently outstanding player on the Tigers men’s basketball roster. This past Saturday, he recorded 31 points, seven rebounds and three assists against AUS third place St. FX. In Sunday’s matchup with UNB, he tallied 21 points, five rebounds and four assists. No doubt that his great leadership both on and off the court has been crucial to Dalhousie’s current number-two place in the AUS standings. A fifth year management student, Mr. Farine is from Toronto, Ont.
