In the summer, Hal Whitehead's 10-metre sailboat Balaena becomes a floating research station. On this expedition, taken August 2010, Balaena sets out from Louisbourg, Cape Breton and heads to The Gully Marine Protected Area in search of an endangered population of northern bottlenose whales. Research carried out by the graduate students aboard involves photographic identification of the whales' dorsal fins and melons, videography of the whales' behaviour at the surface and deploying a hydrophone to record the whales' echo-location clicks. Information gathered on the summer expedition is analyzed throughout the winter.
