'We're definitely aware'

- September 15, 2009 Dalnews reporter talked to Dalhousie students about taking precautions, getting a flu shot and hand washing." />

Does the H1N1 flu worry you? Dalnews reporter Simin Fahandej asked some Dalhousie students about the swine flu and here’s what they said:

“Personally I don’t feel it’s a concern. There are other viruses that kill more Canadians per capita. I think there’s been a lot of media press about it, more than other ones. It’s not worth being concerned over. Given that, I wash my hands, try to be healthy and use common sense in general to protect myself.”

“I don’t really care…don’t touch me, don’t come near me. If somebody coughs I run, somebody sneezes, I run. I’m not really worried about it though. I feel I have a good immune system so I drink a lot of water, orange juice and I stay away from people who show the symptoms.”

“It’s the media hype, if you keep something on the news long enough, it will become important. It’s less personally a concern for me. But I keep my sanitary precautions and keep myself clean.”

“The truth is I’m not doing so much. Back in my country people are very cautious about these things because we have quite a number of people who died but here I think people are more relaxed about it… A lot of sanitizers everywhere which is very good and I think just keep yourself clean. In Indonesia everyone’s wearing a mask. In the airport people are checking you. But coming to Canada … it’s more relaxed here.”

“I’m not taking any extra precautions. At (dentistry) school we’re using standard precautions as they do in dental clinics, washing hands, using hand sanitizers. But it’s not really a concern for me.”

“My wife’s pregnant so I’m going to get the flu shot this year but only because I’m told to get a flu shot by my wife’s doctor. I also work at a restaurant. I’ve never got a flu shot before. But this whole H1N1 thing is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. I mean it’s unfortunate that people are getting sick and some people are dying but I don’t know if you guys remember SARS…if people just relax and stop using Purell 75 times a day it will wear off.”

“We’re definitely aware of it from being told in class, which is good. It will probably reduce the spread of not just H1N1 but colds in general. But I don’t feel like it’s that serious. There isn’t this cloud of fear over everyone at all. I’m not overly concerned but I try to keep my personal hygiene as best possible.”
