Green’s the theme for the second week of March.
The DSU’s Sustainability Office has been busy making preparations since January for Green Week, March 10 to 15.
“Green Week is a week-long event about promoting sustainability on campus,” says Sarah Applebaum, promoter/planner with the Sustainability Office. She’s one of three Dal students who works part time at the office to promote awareness on sustainability issues.
“Sustainability isn’t only about environment sustainability... it’s also social sustainability, cultural sustainability and economic sustainability,” says Ms. Applebaum, 21.
Green Week, originally a DSU initiative, was developed with input from students and student societies.
“There’s a lot happening,” says Ms. Applebaum, who ‘thrives’ on organizing events like this. ”We have a few week long events ... students can bring a reusable mug and get free fair trade coffee or tea, a residence lights-out challenge and two lunch-and-learn events.”
There are also many other events being hosted during Green Week. Jim Reid, the founder and CEO of Green Solutions North America Inc., will be speaking Monday evening at the Rowe building and documentaries are being screened every evening from Tuesday to Friday. There’s a free BBQ and a green market on Thursday.
“Green Week Market is happening all day Thursday. It’s about what’s already happening on campus, what’s being currently worked on and what’s happening in our country and globally,” says Ms. Applebaum, a fourth-year student majoring in environmental science and international development studies.
The market will also feature presentations from various Dalhousie societies and student groups such as the Environmental Program Student Society and Sustain Dal, and local advocacy groups.
Admission to all events is either free or by donation. All are welcome.
Green Week events
Through the week:
Residence lights-out energy challenge: The five main residences (Eliza Ritchie, Sherriff, Risley, Gerrard, and Howe Hall) compete to reduce their energy consumption.
Anti-idling police: Keep your eyes out for members of SustainDal giving out information ‘tickets’ to motorists who leave their cars idling.
Free fair trade tea and coffee: Come by the Lobby of the SUB all week between 9a.m. and noon with your reusable mug and receive free fair trade coffee or tea.
Monday:
Lunch ‘n’ learn: Martha Lowry and the EAC are putting on a presentation about local food in Nova Scotia. In Room 303, SUB, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.
The Story of Stuff: A 20-minute film which will “profoundly alter the way you think about our society’s consumption.” SUB lobby, 1 to 4 p.m.
Lecture: Jim Reid, founder of Green Solutions North America, will speak. Rowe Management Building, 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Green drinks: Stop by the Gradhouse to talk about sustainability and issues of corporate social responsibility. Gradhouse, 7 to 9 p.m.
Green-a-Palooza: The Green Week kick-off concert featuring Charities of Fire, The Meds and stand-up comedy by Picnicface. Grawood, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Tuesday:
BBQ and Parking Meter Party: Bring your bikes, rollerblades, other forms of sustainable transportation and join the party. Front of Killam Library, 12 noon to 2 p.m.
Screening: Radiant City. Room 105, Weldon Law Building, 7 p.m.
Wednesday:
Speech: Donald Dodge of Conserve Nova Scotia provides an overview of the Energy Smart program. Conference room, Risley Hall, 11 a.m to 12 noon.
Lunch ‘n’ Learn: Shrinking your Ecological Footprint with Clean Nova Scotia’s Charlene Young. Room 303, SUB, 12 noon. Lunch is free.
Screening: What are you Waiting For? Room 105, Weldon Law Building, 7 p.m.
Thursday:
Green Week Market: See what’s happening to improve campus sustainability. SUB Lobby, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Screening:Dead in The Water, a documentary about water. Room 105, Weldon Law Building, 7 p.m.
Green-themed Trivia Night: Sustainability-themed questions will be interspersed with usual trivial fare. Prizes include cloth bags and travel mugs. Grawood, 9 p.m.
Friday:
Green Day: Show your support for sustainability issues by wearing green. Campus-wide, all day.
Sustainability and Environment Research Symposium: Poster display. Lobby of Rowe Building, 1 to 3:45 p.m.
Panel Discussion on Food Sustainability: Dr. Randall Westgren, of the University of Illinois, is the keynote speaker. Potter Auditorium, Rowe Building, 3:45-5:30 p.m.
Critical Mass: A celebration of cycling and a protest against car culture. Streets around campus, 3 p.m.
Screening:Sharkwater is a documentary that debunks stereotypes of sharks as man-eating monsters. Suggested $5 donation. Potter Auditorium, Rowe Building.
