The celebrated author who put to paper the timeless true-life tale of hockey heartbreak is coming to Dalhousie.
Roch Carrier, Canada’s former national librarian and author of the beloved children’s book The Hockey Sweater, will deliver the Governor General’s Lecture of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Potter Auditorium, Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building. Dr. Carrier’s talk is called "The Inspiring Adventures of a Man Bent over a Blank Sheet of Paper."
Dr. Carrier wrote his first novel, La Guerre, Yes Sir! in 1968. Since then, the prolific writer has written many other novels, short stories, plays, film and television scripts, essays, travel books and poetry. But he’s best known for a children’s story, The Hockey Sweater, about a kid crazy about Les Habitants and the team’s star player, Maurice “The Rocket” Richard. The story has become such a Canadian classic that an excerpt is commemorated in both official languages on the back of the Canadian five-dollar bill.
The Governor General’s Lectures of RSC are national lecture tours aimed at showcasing excellence in research and artistic activity.
Listen: Roch Carrier reads The Hockey Sweater during a visit to Peter Gzoswki on CBC-Radio's Morningside.
