What do marine biology, study abroad opportunities, “hot” job sectors, creative writing, engineering and mathematical games have in common?
They’re all areas for exploration at Dalhousie’s Discover the Unexpected ’07 Open House.
Dalhousie opens its doors to more than 1,000 prospective students on Friday, Oct. 19 and will again offer a specialized track for parents of prospective students. The parent track will feature a student panel and a question-and-answer session with a member of Dalhousie’s recruitment team.
“We are pleased to be able to offer this event, as it provides prospective students with an opportunity to see what Dalhousie has to offer,” says Larry Maloney, Associate Vice-President Academic and Open House co-chair. “It gives students a chance to experience the campus atmosphere first hand, explore their interests, have their questions answered by current students, faculty or staff, and even apply for admission.”
Registration is under way and those who register by Tuesday, Oct. 16 will be eligible to win their “digs fully loaded” for the coming year — a prize that includes a room in residence, meal plan, laptop computer, “Tech U” support and a $500 bookstore gift certificate.
Students will register for sessions based on personal areas of interest, or they can select a general session that provides an overview of Dal programs. An optional fourth session at the end of the day will allow students to revisit the EXPO or tour residences or Dalplex.
From students to faculty and staff, everyone can be involved in Open House. The committee needs energetic student leaders, faculty and staff to volunteer, whether at registration, greeting guests or leading groups of visiting students around the campus. Volunteering is a great way to show off our campus, programs and services and to allow students to experience all that makes Dalhousie great.
“Discover the Unexpected is going is be a great day, one that happens because of the hard work from members right across the campus community,” says Dr. Maloney. “Co-chair Krista Olmstead and I are continually amazed at the generosity of all the volunteers whowork tirelessly to ensure Open House is a successful event.”
