Dalhousie's Engineering students cleaned up at the second annual Canstruction Nova Scotia competition. In this unique build competition teams of designers, construction professions, architects and engineers created extraordinary structures using only canned food as construction materials.
Dalhousie's Faculty of Engineering students took first place for Structural Ingenuity for "The Ripple Effect," and CIvil Engineering students received an Honourable Mention for their creation, "I am Amphora, the Two-Faced Grecian Vase."
Imaginations ran wild as participants were challenged to use their knowledge and skills to stack cans into structurally sound objects. Tape, cardboard and rubber bands took the place of wood, concrete, and steel girders, as the structures created pushed engineering and architectural boundaries.
Once completed, the structures were surveyed and graded by an eight-member jury made up of architecture, design and engineering professionals. Awards were officially presented on November 2, 2005 at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel.
