Research Opportunities
If you are interested in obtaining research experience, the Faculty of Science provides a number of opportunities for undergraduate students. You can gain experience through volunteering, summer employment, or work throughout the school year. Departments offering research experience have listed these opportunities on the following web page: dal.ca/science/urops. You will also find links to funding sources and read about success stories from students who have had the chance to participate in research throughout their undergraduate degree.
In addition, you can start exploring the various faculty websites (Medicine, Science, Dentistry, Arts & Social Sciences, etc.) in your second and third year. On each site, there will be a tab for Departments, with an additional Research tab in each department. Here, you can investigate who is doing what research at Dalhousie. If you find something of interest, reach out to the researcher (usually via email to start) to inform them of your interest in their research. I recommend reaching out to more than one. Tell them who you are, in what year of study you occupy, why you are interested in their research, what your intentions are (volunteer, work, &/or Honours), any relevant courses you’ve taken, and your GPA. Ask to meet with them to discuss your interests further.
