A New Medical Sciences Cohorts Initiative

Inclusive Pathways to Medical Professions (IPMP)

Overview

Working with the communities most underrepresented in our region, the new Inclusive Pathways to Medical Professions (IPMP) cohort initiative aims to attract and support Indigenous students from the Maritimes and African Nova Scotian students in the Medical Sciences BSc program using a cohort approach.

Starting in Fall 2022, we will accept 10 Mi’kmaq and 10 African Nova Scotian students (in addition to our current enrolment). Each cohort will have a wrap-around support framework that will be overseen by Cohort Advisors, who themselves are representative of our target communities.

This program will achieve the following:
(i) Increase the representation of Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students in the Medical Sciences BSc program
(ii)  Increase the representation of Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students in downstream programs including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy etc.
(iii) Strengthen ties with the Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities
