Quantitative Analysis of Foraminifera in Bras D’Or Lakes

(PDF -  Mb)

Distribution of recent benthic Foraminifera in Bras d’Or sediments was investigated by statistical methods. The analysis was carried out in two parts.

Part I. The microdistribution of Foraminifera on the surface of the sediment was analysed by using the relationship of variance to the mean as an index of aggregation. The analysis suggested that Foraminifera are distributed in a clumped pattern, i.e., the variance is bigger than the mean.

Temporal and Lateral variation in foraminiferal numbers was tested by performing analysis of variance. The results suggest a change in the population taking place between June 15th and June 29th. In the majority of instances Foraminifera are distributed unevenly between the localities tested.

Part II. Association analysis of foraminiferal species was carried out by factorial analysis of qualitative data, i.e., the presence or absence of a species in a sample. The analysis divided the study area in a number of regions that are different with respect to the distribution of Foraminifera. In most instances the division could be correlated to known ecological factors.
