Listen to Dr. Alex Veinot on Sciographies
Sciographies, the podcast and radio show that details the lives and research interests of some of Dalhousie's leading scientists, has returned for its sixth season. New episodes will premiere on Thursday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. from October 3 - November 14 on CKDU 88.1 FM in Halifax. Sciographies can also be found on most podcast platforms, including Apple, Spotify, and Amazon Music. Learn more about the new season, which is again hosted by Dal oceanographer Dr. David Barclay and includes seven episodes featuring nine researchers and alumni.
Dr. Alex Veinot of the Department of Chemistry is the featured guest in this week's episode. Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia and a member of the Glooscap First Nation, Dr. Veinot discusses how taking apart motors in his dad's workshop sparked his curiosity, his journey from "not really liking school" to earning a Vanier Scholarship, as well as his commitment to bringing more Indigenous perspectives to science. Read more in this week's Dal News story that includes excerpts from the conversation and listen to the full episode.

Dal researchers' floating water desalination device could help address water scarcity
Dal researchers, including Dr. Mita Dasog and postdoctoral fellow Dr. Matthew Margeson, have developed a low-cost, portable floating water desalination device powered by solar energy that could help address water scarcity in developing countries or remote areas. The device is also made with a secret ingredient: used tires. Read our Dal News story for more on the device and how it manages to be high-performing yet cost efficient.
