It’s no secret that the experiences that we have throughout our lives contribute to who we are. Our experiences, at home or at work, teach us much of what we know and contribute to our overall skillset. We become experts in a wide range of areas, whether we are trying to or not. For example, through managing your family’s budget you can learn invaluable knowledge about accounting, financial forecasting, and problem-solving.

Unfortunately, in an academic setting, these learning experiences have been ignored for far too long. When you or I wish to gain advanced standing or program admission through our prior learning experiences, typically only those experiences that have occurred in a classroom are the ones that count.

At the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development, we value prior learning gained through work and life experience and want to help you to achieve your academic goals in a faster and more cost-efficient way. Our Recognition of Prior Learning process awards learners access to formal study and advanced standing through the assessment of prior learning including workplace training, independent study, volunteer work, travel, and hobbies. By doing so, we can help you avoid having to learn something you already know, which can cut down on the money and time required to receive an academic credential.
