Creating a Healthy Workplace Environment for Your Employees

Posted by Sherry Carmont, Director, Health & Wellness Programs on September 16, 2021 in News

What does a healthy workplace look like? Is it an environment that celebrates innovation? A place that encourages collaboration and teamwork to help employees reach their personal goals?

The World Health Organization describes it as “one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of all workers and the sustainability of the workplace.”

Employees in a healthy workplace are productive, thriving and feeling fulfilled with their work. They are physically, mentally and socially well. They are not ones to be frequently absent, ill, or in conflict with their co-workers. It’s not hard to make a business case for why it’s necessary to develop an effective wellness strategy within your organization.

With the return to office plans well underway for many, organizations need to acknowledge the new set of concerns people are facing as they enter the post-lockdown world. Identifying high-risk areas amongst employees and proactively providing tools and solutions to lower these anxieties can help lower absenteeism and even presenteeism that occurs when employees are present at work, but not fully functioning. High error rates or staff turnover costs can also decrease through effective wellness planning.

Designing a workplace wellness plan should focus on total wellness, meaning physical, mental and social health, and how they interact to help employees thrive. Wellness plans must also be agile. A plan needs to be evaluated regularly and adjusted when needed.
