The Schulich School of Law Welcomes Lisson Experts‑in‑Residence

The Schulich School of Law is pleased to welcome two Lisson Experts-in-Residence, Jon Legorburu and Carla Swansburg (BA ’89, LLB ’93), who will each be teaching an upper-year intensive course in the 2024-2025 academic year.

James 'Jim' Lisson (’75) established the Experts-in-Residence program in 2011 to bring leading experts in the fields of law and business to the law school to lecture or teach short courses, mentor students, and foster unique and long-standing relationships with international leaders in these fields. Lisson served as Counsel to law firms in Canada and the UK, and has extensive experience as an advisor to businesses in Canada and internationally.

Jon Legorburu

Jon Legorburu will teach LAWS 2352 – The Rise of Cyber-Crime and Internet Manipulation: Practical, Legal and Social Impacts, beginning in late November 2024.

Legorburu is head of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department at ByrneWallace LLP and is one of Ireland’s leading public sector and commercial litigation lawyers. He is also one of Ireland’s top practitioners in the areas of regulatory investigations and corporate and white-collar crime, responsible for anchoring large-scale project-based investigations and legal proceedings in the financial services, health, and insurance sectors.

His chosen areas of specialization are company and corporate disputes, regulatory disputes, project-based litigation in the construction and logistics sectors, and intellectual property/information technology matters. His work has included representing clients in business-critical injunctions to protect or freeze assets and he has worked in leading law firms in England and Australasia including Slaughter and May in the United Kingdom and Chapman Tripp in New Zealand, before joining ByrneWallace LLP in 2010.

Carla Swansburg (BA ’89, LLB ’93)

Carla Swansburg will teach LAWS 2351 – The Technology in Legal Practice in February 2025.

Swansburg is the CEO of ClearyX, a fully remote, tech-forward firm focused on developing strategies for new and innovative models of legal service delivery. Using unique combinations of people, process and technology, they are re-imagining how legal services can be delivered in ways that provide improved efficiency, high-quality work product, and a better client and user experience.

She has been a trailblazer in legal technology for over three decades. Her career journey includes leading transformation and innovation projects, overseeing the implementation of emerging legal technologies in practice, and building high-performing teams in new legal markets and services. She regularly speaks and is a frequent interview subject on topics relating to legal service delivery and technology. She was named one of Canada’s Most Influential Lawyers for 2022 by Canadian Lawyer magazine in the Changemaker category, and was a finalist in the Business Management category for the Canadian General Counsel Awards in 2023.
