The Schulich School of Law extends its condolences and sympathy to the family, friends, and colleagues of alumnus Shaun MacMillan (LLB '09), who died suddenly in Halifax on August 27 at the age of 38. We will remember Shaun for his sharp intellect and wit, as well as for the giving and caring person he was.
Shaun earned his BA (honours) and MA in English from Dalhousie University, then his law degree. He was called to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society in 2010 following the completion of his articles.
His legal career began as an associate with Blois, Nickerson & Bryson LLP in Halifax. He later joined Eastlink as in-house counsel. Shaun exemplified the Weldon Tradition of public service by volunteering on the board of directors of iNova Credit Union in 2013, where he was elected chairman in 2015.
Raised in a family-run business, Shaun worked to improve access for Nova Scotian businesses, building design efficiencies through his passions for technology, software and modern management and legal practices.
"Shaun was one of the most gifted advocates in his class and was a co-winner of the Smith Shield mooting prize during his final year of law school in 2008," says Professor Cynthia Chewter. "I asked if he would return to judge the second-year moots a few years later, and he agreed with enthusiasm. Shaun gave willingly of his time and expertise over the past three years to further Dalhousie's mooting program. He will be missed."
Shaun's family and friends will remember him at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market on Thursday, September 1, from 7-10 p.m. All are welcome.
