In September 2011, we were delighted to announce the foundation of the MacBain Chair in Health Law and Policy – the generous gift of John McCall MacBain through Bold Ambitions: The Campaign for Dalhousie – a chair to put Dal on the frontier of health law and policy research in Canada.
Fast forward to 2013, and the Health Law Institute continues to move from strength to strength. As MacBain Chair in Health Law & Policy Professor Joanna Erdman notes: "Dalhousie is now on the lips of people in the broader global health community ... they think about Dalhousie as a place where exciting things are happening in this field."
Health law and policy is an increasingly important area of work with legal and ethical impacts spanning many areas. It tackles difficult and highly controversial topics such as: end of life treatment, policy, and practice; patient safety; privacy and confidentiality of health information; neuroethics; and public health emergencies.
Dalhousie has the the largest active health law and policy faculty in Canada. The Schulich School of Law is the first in the country to offer health law as a specialization at the undergraduate (JD) level. Our truly multidisciplinary setting, which includes the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Health Professions, gives students a diverse learning experience like no other school in Canada.
