Smith Shield Moot
The Smith Shield Moot is the premiere mooting event of the academic calendar with a tradition dating back to 1927 and selection for the Smith Shield team is a significant accolade
The moot is a not-for-credit exhibition that sees two teams of two student advocates argue a hypothetical appeal before a panel of lawyers and judges - and in front of the whole Weldon community.
Each team is required to prepare and submit a written factum to the judges, and the teams are supported by an alternate who is willing to step in if another team member is unable to participate. The judge’s panel usually includes judges from the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.
This year, Professors Liam McHugh-Russell and Jodi Lazare selected from candidates nominated by judges from the cumpolsory second-year moot, and based their decisions on comments from those judges and a review of facta from the moot.
