Winter 2020 Student News

Written by Student Society President, Holly Nason

Dalhousie Physiotherapy students worked hard last semester when the Class of 2020 was studying Neuroscience and Neurotherapeutics and the Class of 2021 was finishing up their first semester of Musculoskeletal and Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy. First-year students then completed a two-week orientation placement throughout the Atlantic provinces in order to familiarize themselves with the clinical environment. The new year began with the Class of 2020 on their Neurotherapeutics placement where they gained field experience throughout Canada. Meanwhile the Class of 2021 remained in the Forrest Building tenaciously continuing their studies in anticipation of transferring their newly learned class skills to real-world placement experience.

Wondering what else happened during the Fall 2019 semester? Let’s recap! The students were very busy fundraising for For The Health Of It (FTHOI) and, despite their ongoing rigorous study regime, were able to raise considerable funds for Inclusive Movement, a charity program focused on providing individuals with disabilities a safe place to learn dance and be active. This charity was chosen by the Chairs of the event Kiera Rigby and Chandler Scott, who worked extremely hard to ensure this event went off without a hitch! The School of Physiotherapy’s FTHOI production, led by Olivia Grimshaw and Emma Presley, to tremendous consecutive win for the School. Performances by all participating Health Profession Schools/Units were thoroughly enjoyed by audience. An impressive $18,000 (approx) was raised for Inclusive Movement programming! Following FTHOI the students focused their attention on raising awareness and funds to men’s health. During the month of Novemeber male students participated in the Andrew Haley led  ‘Movember’ initiative, by growing out their ‘staches, - or at least trying to! We ended the semester excited for the holidays and to spend time with family!

Now, all reunited in the Forrest Building, we will be working on planning the 2020 Physiotherapy Ball which will take place in early March. This will be one of the last nights filled with dancing, a good meal, and tons of fun that the students get to enjoy with each other, as well as the professors, before exams start for the first-year students. The second-year students will continue their last semester before going onto their final two placements and starting to study for the national tests. Please stay tuned for more updates on what the School of Physiotherapy is up to in the upcoming months!
