Winter 2020 Research Update

Olga Theou & Cheryl Kozey

The federal Minister of Seniors, the Honourable Deb Schulte, was in Nova Scotia recently. She and Cumberland-Colchester MP Lenore Zann, visited Dal’s Truro Campus to meet with researchers to talk about pressing research on seniors issues. The roundtable discussion saw four researchers, including Dalhousie School of Physiotherapy’s Drs. Cheryl Kozey and Dr. Olga Theou sharing current research projects with the Minister and engaging in discussion of pressing issues effecting seniors health and social wellbeing.

Dr Rebecca Moyer was an invited speaker at the Scandanavian Sport Medicine Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark January 30 to Feb 1, 2020

Dr Moyer spoke about the Treatment of Medial Knee Osteoarthritis in the Athletic Knee - Does limb alignment matter? and Cartilage Health in Sport - The role of unloading and alignment in cartilage health.

By Associate Director, Dr. Derek Rutherford

In the past several months, local, national and international research engagements have been a part of faculty life in the School of Physiotherapy. With over 30 publications and speaking/workshop engagements, the School of Physiotherapy Faculty have been busy translating knowledge across stakeholder groups from scientists to clinicians, government officials and health care consumers of Nova Scotia, nationally and abroad.

In 2015, the Faculty of Health launched the PhD in Health Program. Currently, close to half of the faculty in the School of Physiotherapy are supervising PHD students in this program. Of note; Dr. Adria Quigley (School of Physiotherapy Supervisor: Dr. Marilyn Mackay-Lyons), defended her PhD earlier this year, becoming the first graduate of this highly sought after training program.

Together, your faculty and their graduate students are advancing physiotherapy-related research, supporting our strategic plan to grow the research enterprise in the School of Physiotherapy for a positive future of physiotherapy support and recognition. Below is a detailed list of these accomplishments. Congratulations everyone!

FACULTY ACTIVITIES

GRANTS

Funder: CIHR (Network Catalyst Grant)

Project Title: Canadian MSK Rehab Research Network
Funding Awarded: $1,996,990
Period of Funding: 2020-2025
Dr Rebecca Moyer: Co-Principal Investigator

Launched in 2016, the Canadian MSK Rehab Research Network brought together 80 researchers, collaborators and knowledge users, and 20 partners/consumer groups. Sincethen, the network has grown by 43%, research priorities were established, 17 pilot projects were supported, 23 trainees were integrated, and new teams were created. We built innovative funding and learning opportunities for trainees, and research platforms that allow us to share clinical and biomechanical data nationally. We will now build on these capacities
and partnerships to develop studies that require national networks to conduct high impact MSK research to enhance mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.

We will link MSK research-intensive clinical centres and patient groups who will guide and develop large- scale national studies that will create new knowledge using the capacity and expertise of our network. Network values that are integrated in our work include: patient engagement, equity, working across disciplines and regions of Canadas, and meaningful training. Network activities will build capacity in MSK rehabilitation research and use national platforms to produce novel research findings.

Dal/NSHA researchers include:
Cheryl Kozey (Physiotherapy)
Derek Rutherford (Physiotherapy)
Jill Hayden (Community Health and Epidemiology)
Nathan Urquhart (NSHA Orthopaedic Surgery)
