Recent NP Grad looks forward to precepting future Dal nurses and nurse practitioners
Dal Nursing wishes current NP (Nurse Practitioner) students, past graduates, and members of the NP practice community who generously support our NP students a very happy National NP Week (Nov. 12-18)! We’d like to celebrate by featuring stories about and profiles on some of our graduates!
Maggie Gillis, (MN, NP '22)
1. Where are you providing care now?
I'm working for Nova Scotia Health in Antigonish. My job is 50% long term care and 50% primary care in a clinic where I see patients who don't have a primary care provider. I have also been doing (a very small amount!) overtime hours with Virtual Care NS seeing patients virtually on the Maple app.
2. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I've been working for seven months in what is pretty much my dream job! I absolutely love my job--it's a perfect fit and so rewarding. My practice is so varied and truly is "all-ages." I see many newborn babies for their 1st week check-up and continue to follow them through, I have also done end-of-life comfort care in LTC and the community, and lots in between! It has been a surprisingly rewarding start to my career- patients are truly grateful to have somewhere to access care given the current shortage of primary care providers.
3. Anything you want to say to your fellow NP’s during NP week?
After seven months, do I have all the answers? No way... I'll never have all of the answers! But the NP program at Dal has armed with me the tools, skills, and confidence to figure it out. Thank you for establishing a safe, encouraging, positive learning environment and consistently motivating us to think critically and holistically. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I look forward to precepting future Dal nurses and nurse practitioners in the future.
