With the new Collaborative Health Education Building expected to open in the Fall of 2015, faculty are looking forward to the 3rd Floor simulation facilities in particular. These simulation facilities - ranging from acute care suites involving high-fidelity mannequins to an apartment that recreates the home environment - will provide opportunities for both uniprofessional procedural skill development and interprofessional team-based experiences. In anticipation of the opening of this simulation lab, the Faculty of Health Professions was awarded $60,000 from the Dalhousie University Strategic Initiatives Fund to develop capacity for implementing interprofessional simulation experiences. The focus of interprofessional simulations is developing competencies related to collaboration, communication and team dynamics rather than specific technical skills. An IPHE Simulation Advisory Committee has been struck to develop a plan for a sustainable interprofessional simulation program.
Two exciting opportunities for simulation education are occuring in November. On November 3 and 4, the School of Nursing is hosting a Simulation Showcase which will feature both guest lectures and hands-on demonstrations. On November 14 and 15, the Annual Fear Memorial Education Conference, hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, will focus on "Simulation Education in the Maritimes."
If you have an interest in developing interprofessional simulation activities for your students and would like to provide input to the IPHE Simulation Advisory Committee, please contact the Dean at will.webster@dal.ca.
