In May 2013, the School of Nursing will celebrate the graduation of the first two BScN students who had attended the Dalhousie Nursing Summer Camps for Youth of African Descent. Janice During and Shanice Bennett participated in the campus in 2004 and 2006 respectively, while they were in junior high school. In a recent interview (soon to appear in Dal News), Janice and Shanice recalled how the camp had introduced them to the many opportunities for a career in nursing, and while they had considered other career options in the following years, they indicated that the camp had reinforced their desire to become a nurse. Both students hope to begin their nursing careers working with adults in the acute care setting. They talked about their future interests such as community health nursing, and possible plans to advance their careers through graduate education.
Promoting Diversity
Approximately 65 junior high students attended the nursing summer camps from 2004 -2010. Currently there are four former campers in the BScN program (pictured above). The summer camp initative was part of a larger School of Nursing Recruitment and Retention Program, aimed at enhancing diversity within the School and promoting the provision of culturally responsive health care for people of African descent. The outcomes of the summer camp have clearly demonstrated the benefits of such initiatives in promoting diversity within the School of Nursing. Although the summer camp has not been offered for the past two years, the School of Nursing is exploring options for future initiatives.
Congratulations and best wishes to Janice and Shanice!
