Teaching Assistant and Marker/Demonstrator Positions

Department of Industrial Engineering

The following positions are open for the Fall Term, 2024 (September-December).

Applicants MUST be available during the scheduled lab times (please check the academic timetable online here for lab dates and times.)

TA’s may be required to invigilate quizzes and examinations.

Definitions:

Teaching Assistant – an employee hired to assist an instructor in the presentation and delivery of a course, who is required to directly interact with students and whose duties include a combination of the following: tutoring, marking, demonstrating, monitoring labs, conducting discussion groups/tutorials, proctoring, field trips and assisting with online teaching and other duties of a similar nature.

Marker – an hourly paid employee hired to mark and/or grade the written work of students.

Demonstrator – an hourly paid employee hired to assist students in the laboratory such as completing laboratory exercises, conducting laboratory demonstrations, and assisting in the setting up, and/or the taking down of the laboratory, and laboratory experiments

  •     IENG 2005 - Engineering Economics 
        Positions: 1 x TA (90 hours), 1 x TA (65 hours); 3 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
  •     IENG 3302 - Processes & Systems
        Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
        Required (For TA position): Must have done this course before
  •     IENG 3303 - Ergonomics and Work Design 
        Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
  •     IENG 3305 - Computational Methods and Algorithms for IE
        Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
        Required: skilled in Python programming and algorithms
  •     IENG 3316 - Design of Information Management Systems
        Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
        Required: database and application development skill
  •     IENG 3344 - Operations Research: Linear Models
        Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
        NOTE: TA MUST be available during the scheduled lab and midterm/quiz time;
     needs knowledge of LP coding in Gusek (Gurobipy is an asset).
  •    IENG 3345 - Operations Research: Stochastic and Non-Linear Models
       Position: 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours), shared with IENG 6917
  •   IENG 4529 - Industrial and Organizational Behaviour
      Position: 1 x TA (45 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (25 hours)
  •   IENG 4564 - Health Care Systems Engineering Offered last winter
      Position: 1 x TA (45 hours)
      NOTE: For TA positions, applicants MUST be available during the scheduled lab and midterm/quiz times
  •   IENG 4568 - Quantitative Project Management
      Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours); 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
      NOTE: TA MUST be available during the scheduled lab and midterm/quiz time; needs knowledge of LP coding in Gusek and MS Project.
  •   IENG 4574 Decision & Risk
      Position: 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
  •   IENG 4579/6909 – Supply Chain Management
      Positions: 1 x TA (65 hours) 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)
      NOTE: MUST be available during the scheduled lab and midterm/quiz time; needs    knowledge of programming (Python or other languages) and optimization software (Excel, AMPL, Gurobi, CPLEX, Gusek, etc.)
  •   IENG 6917 – Simulation of Industrial Systems
      Position: 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours), shared with IENG 3345
  •   IENG 6962 – Advanced Topics in Maintenance Engineering and Management
      Position: 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (45 hrs) 
  •   IENG 8892 – Coop Reports
      Position: 1 x Marker/Demonstrator (65 hours)

Application Process:

Required criteria:

  • Have completed this or a similar academic course with a high grade
  • Senior year undergraduate students are allowed to apply for 3000-level or below courses
  • Graduate students are allowed for any of the courses
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and learning
  • Empathy for students
  • Precision in marking and giving technical advice
  • High proficiency in reading and writing in English

Optional criteria:

  • Have experience in teaching/teaching assistance/marking
  • Graduate-level course in a similar subject
  • Training in being a TA or Marker/Demonstrators from the Center for Learning and Teaching

Notes:

  • Some jobs may be cancelled or reduced in hours if enrollment in the Fall is too low. Final decisions on cancellation/reduction will occur by August 31.
  • Candidates are advised to seek training in Teaching Assistantship from CLT.
  • Candidates will be required to take Department TA/Marker training, which will be offered in the Fall term.
  • TA’s may be required to help invigilate quizzes and examinations.
