Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the application process for an Associated University student starting Year 3 at Dalhousie?

A. Students apply by Apr-30 prior to starting Year 3 (including co-op) in Sep : Application Portal (dal.ca). For example, if you are anticipating transferring to Dalhousie to start Year 3 in the Fall 2026 term, you must apply for admission by April 30, 2026.

Q. What if I have not completed all of my admissions requirements by the end of the Summer term prior to my transfer?

A. You will be ineligible for admission and will need to apply to defer your placement to the subsequent year. You can defer your placement once (eg. from Fall 2026 to Fall 2027).

Q. Do I have to start at Dalhousie in Year 3? Can I transfer sooner?

A. It is possible to transfer to Dalhousie University prior to Year 3. You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 and satisfy all admissions requirements. In this case your courses will be assessed on a course by course basis for transfer. For a course to be eligible for transfer you must have a grade of C or higher in that course. Students who transfer to Dalhousie University prior to Year 3 must satisfy all Dalhousie Admissions requirements for admission to their program of placement.

Q. Do I require a Diploma/Certificate of Engineering to start Year 3?

A. No. Admission to Year in disciplines is a course-based transfer. For example, to enter the Chemical Engineering program a student must have completed all of the Year 1 and Year 2 courses including the three discipline-specific courses for Chemical Engineering and hold a Chemical Engineering placement for that admission cycle.

Q. When do I apply for placement?

A. You will apply for placement in the Winter term of the calendar year prior to when you anticipate transferring to Dalhousie University. For example, If you will start Year 3 at Dalhousie in Fall 2026 term, you would apply for placement in the Winter 2025 term. If you will start Year 3 at Dalhousie in Fall 2027 term, you would apply for placement in the Winter 2026 term. The last day in the Winter term to apply for a placement is April 30.

Q. Can I defer my placement? How would I do that?

A. You can defer your placement by participating in the next placement cycle. You can defer your placement once (eg. from Fall 2026 to Fall 2027).

Q. What will happen to my renewable scholarship I hold at my AU?

A. Students who hold a cash renewable scholarship that would be eligible for renewal at their AU if they were to return in the subsequent year are eligible for scholarship value matching up to $5000 under the following conditions:
1) You have completed all required course work for admission to the program to which you have a placement by the end of the WInter term preceding admission.
2) You have a cumulative Engineering GPA >= 3.85 at the time you complete all of your admission requirements and
3) You have applied for a Year 3 Admission Scholarship by April 30 in the Winter term preceding admission. If any of those 3 conditions are not met, then scholarship matching will not occur. Scholarships do not transfer - We will simply match up to $5000 for one year. Please note that scholarship matching does not occur for any third party scholarships or awards.
