Dr. Mark Filiaggi is the Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Studies as well as Professor and Interim Chair, Department of Applied Oral Sciences, within the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University. He holds additional cross-appointments in the School of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Radiology. For over 20 years his core research program has focused on biomaterials and biomedical devices primarily intended for bone-interfacing and cardiovascular applications, with an emphasis on novel polyphosphate processing approaches to facilitate localized delivery of therapeutic agents, including antibiotics, anticancer drugs and therapeutic metal ions. At the heart of this program is a desire to use sound materials science engineering principles and unique processing strategies to optimize the biological performance of materials destined for clinical applications. In total, he has captured more than $4M in grant funding as a Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator. Dr. Filiaggi has held several leadership roles in the academic and research communities. He is a Past-President and Board member of the Canadian Biomaterials Society and served for 6 years as Secretary-Treasurer for the Canadian Association for Dental Research. He completed a 6-year term as Associate Vice-President, Research at Dalhousie University in 2018. He has served as an Executive Committee member for the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR) since its inception in 2012 and is currently a Steering Committee Member for the OCDOC CHMS/OHC Technical Working Group.
