The Oro-Systemic Pathways (OSP) Lab at Dalhousie University investigates the complex connections between oral and systemic health by focusing on host-microbial interactions at mucosal surfaces. Rooted in periodontology, microbiology, and immunology, the lab’s research examines oral inflammation and microbial dysbiosis as both markers and drivers of systemic diseases. The lab’s three primary research areas include: examining oral inflammation’s role in systemic diseases, conducting clinical and interventional studies to assess how oral health interventions affect systemic disease progression, and investigating health disparities in Oro-systemic diseases within racialized and underrepresented populations to guide personalized healthcare strategies. Through these multidisciplinary efforts, the OSP Lab aims to improve patient outcomes, develop biomarkers for early detection, and establish equitable, evidence-based healthcare practices.
