Dal Dentistry runs for the cure

Team Dal Dentistry at Run for the Cure 2015

In her second year of studying dentistry, Erica Forward’s (DDS4) mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Erica ran her first Run for the Cure that year as part of a Dal Dentistry team of four.

Seeing teams from the faculties of medicine and health professions inspired Erica to put together a modest-sized team of 10-12 runners during her third year. But it was for Run for the Cure 2015 that Erica really pulled out the stops. She created a team webpage and spread the word early. “Ten people signed up the first day,” she says.

On the big day itself, October 4, the sun was shining and the Dal Dentistry team numbered 25 in total, all wearing their team T-shirts. “We had a nice variety of students from the Faculty,” says Erica, “including students across all years of the program, students from dental hygiene, and Qualifying Program students. Dr. Boran also ran with us.”

The team raised $1067 for breast cancer research, with many contributions coming from dentistry faculty members. “It was a great day – I’m really pleased,” she says.

Erica will graduate in the spring. With luck, there will be someone out there who will take up the baton and carry on her great work.
